German for studying

German for your studies that really holds up at university

Admission, seminars, term papers, presentations: at university, you need German you can rely on. At WkD, you build it up step by step, with real language instead of textbook sentences, at a pace that fits around your life.

  • Real everyday German
  • Live in small groups
  • Personal correction with grades

Experiences

What our participants say

2 out of 3 of our learners had already learned German somewhere else before.

“The presentations really improved my German. My pronunciation has become clearer and I speak much more confidently today.”

Ing. S. Nikravesh

“I had taken various German courses for two years before, and online courses had not really worked for me either. Here it was different: everyone was active, everyone had to join in and speak. That way I learned much more.”

K. Olena

“What helped me most: in class only German is spoken, right from the start. At first that was unfamiliar, but after two weeks I didn't want it any other way.”

M. Keller

“I needed B2 to get my qualifications recognized. The course was focused exactly on the exam. The preparation for the speaking part helped me a lot.”

Dr. A. Jafari Zare

“The small group helped me a lot. We got corrections in every lesson and could speak a lot. That is exactly what I missed in my previous course with lots of participants.”

A. Goli

“Because of my work at the clinic, I only had time in the evenings. The class times were adjusted to my shift schedule, so I could still attend regularly.”

Dr. F. Hassani

Is this right for you?

This page is for you if

You want to apply

You still need the right language level for admission, and the deadline is getting closer.

You're already studying

You sit in the seminar and understand about half. You barely dare to speak, even though you know the subject well.

You're starting from zero

You're planning to study in Germany and are starting from scratch with the language. That works too, starting from A1.

The problem

You have a certificate, and you still don't understand the lecture.

This isn't an isolated case. We have had learners with a B2 certificate who had to start over. They could pass exams, but they could barely speak in real life.

When you only study for the exam

  • You know the rules, but no sentence comes out in conversation
  • You understand slowly spoken practice texts, but not a real discussion
  • You read academic texts word by word and lose the meaning
  • The certificate promises more than you can really do
  • Your texts hardly ever come back corrected

At WkD

  • You speak in every lesson, and in group lessons also in small groups
  • You hear natural German from the very start, not just practice material
  • Presentations are part of it and train several skills at once
  • Writing starts simple and is built up step by step later on
  • Your teacher corrects your texts personally in the learning portal, with a grade and feedback

The most common question

“How am I supposed to learn German in German if I don't know any German yet?”

This is the question we hear most often. It's a fair one. And the answer is simpler than you think.

We start right from the basics

At the start, it's about pronunciation and the alphabet. Then come single words. Then simple situations. Nobody expects you to understand a long sentence before you know your first word.

Showing meaning instead of translating

You see what a word means: in a picture, in the situation, in an example or in a simpler explanation. That way, you remember it as a picture in your head, not as a word on a vocabulary list.

We explain things in a way you understand

Lessons are entirely in German. For grammar, you also get materials in your own language so you can understand the rules with confidence. Only one thing matters: that you understand everything.

What you gain

From the very first lesson, you get your ear used to German. Then German is no longer a language you translate in your head first. It's one you understand directly.

How we teach

Language that sticks, because you use it

WkD stands for real, natural, everyday-ready German. Not textbook German that works in the classroom but not outside it.

Explained visually

Pictures, videos, audio. You see and hear what a word means, instead of learning it by heart.

Explained simply

We explain things in simple language and with examples. No technical terms that need an explanation of their own.

Real situations and stories

You learn through situations that really happen to you, and stories that stick in your mind.

Natural spoken German

The way people really talk. So you understand not just the news, but your colleagues too.

Speaking a lot

In group lessons, you sometimes work in small groups. There, everyone gets a turn, not just the confident ones.

Practical grammar

You learn grammar because you need it, at the moment you need it. Not as an end in itself.

For everyone with little time

Short on time? We plan around that.

Our participants are adults with plenty of other things going on: work, family, government offices, settling into a new country. If that sounds like your life, you need a course that takes your time seriously.

That's why we deliberately don't assign large amounts of homework. There is some, but it's planned so that working people and students can really manage it. For us, it matters more that your time in class is worth it than that you work through lists at home.

And if you couldn't keep up in a lesson: after every lesson, you get a PDF with the important mistakes, new words and sentences. With it, you can catch up in just a few minutes.

One thing first

What level do you need for your studies?

That depends on the university and the degree program. Two rough guidelines:

  • B2 is required for many degree programs and for getting many professional qualifications recognized.
  • C1 is a requirement for most German-taught degree programs.

Official: for German-taught degree programmes, the TestDaF with TDN 4 in all sections, for example, is accepted as proof for unrestricted admission. Source: Study in Germany, the DAAD portal.

Exactly what you need depends on your individual situation. Please check with the relevant institution: your university, Studienkolleg (foundation course) or immigration office. We're happy to tell you how to get there from where you stand now.

Two clicks, and you'll see the schedule and price. Then you can sign up directly and pay online.

1 What level are you starting at?

Not sure? Choose A1 if you're a complete beginner. In the free trial lesson, we'll figure out together what really fits.

2 How would you like to learn?

You decide how many people take part. You only learn as two or three if you all want that and agree. Otherwise, private lessons are one-to-one.

Good to know

  • Fixed dates Your place in the group course is reserved for the whole course. If a group can’t start as planned, you get a place in the next suitable course, or we find another solution together.
  • Can’t make it once? You’ll find the material for the lesson in the portal, so you can catch up quickly.
  • Private, no minimum term You can cancel private lessons at any time.

Questions almost everyone asks

Before you sign up

Do you also prepare for TestDaF, telc or Goethe?

Our focus is telc, plus Goethe and g.a.s.t. (TestDaF). We prepare you, but we don't hold the exam and don't issue official certificates. You take the exam elsewhere, and we help you find an exam center.

Exam preparation is a group course, on weekends or on weekdays, in the afternoon or evening. It has 15 teaching units (UE) of 45 minutes each. If you need more practice after that, you can book extra UE for an additional fee. Would you rather prepare privately? Message us directly on WhatsApp, and you'll get a personal offer.

How long does it take to reach B2 or C1?

From our experience: from complete beginner to B1 takes around three and a half months, from B1 to B2 about three more months, and from B2 to C1 roughly another three months. These figures are based on experience, not a guarantee. It depends on how regularly you attend and how much you do yourself.

I don't know any German at all yet. Can I still join?

Yes. The A1 course is made exactly for that. We start with pronunciation and the alphabet. Then come single words, then simple situations. You don't need any prior knowledge.

How can lessons work in German if I understand almost nothing?

Because we show the meaning instead of translating it: with pictures, the situation, examples and simple language. Lessons are entirely in German. For grammar, you also get materials in your own language so you can understand the rules with confidence.

I have little time. How much do I have to do at home?

There is homework, but deliberately not much. It's planned so that you can manage it alongside work or studies. You'll find it in your WkD learning portal, also as an app on your phone. For many exercises, you see right away what is correct. After every lesson, you also get a PDF with your most important mistakes, new words and sentences.

Who corrects my homework?

That depends on the task. Many exercises in your learning portal, like gap fills, matching or multiple choice, are checked by the portal instantly. Your writing tasks and open answers are corrected personally by your teacher. You see their corrections and comments, your grade and their feedback right in the app.

What if the course turns out not to be right for me?

Before you sign up, you can take a free trial lesson of 45 minutes. There, you see how we work, and we see what suits you. Only then do you decide. Your statutory right of withdrawal is not affected by this.

What do I need technically?

Just a computer or tablet with an internet connection. Nothing more.

Do I get a certificate at the end?

From us, you get a certificate of attendance or a course certificate. We do not hold official language exams and do not issue official language certificates. You take the exam elsewhere. We prepare you for it and help you find an exam center.

Are books and materials included in the price?

No. We teach with our own textbooks. They cost extra and are available as a PDF or in print.

Do you also offer exam preparation?

Yes, for B1, B2 and C1. Exam preparation is a group course, either on weekends or on weekdays. On weekdays, we teach in the afternoon or evening. On weekends, we teach during the day or in the evening. It has 15 teaching units (UE) of 45 minutes each. If you need more practice after that, you can book extra UE for an additional fee. Our focus is telc, plus Goethe and g.a.s.t. (TestDaF).

Would you rather prepare privately? Message us directly on WhatsApp, and you'll get a personal offer.
